Perelman Performing Arts Center

The Perelman Performing Arts Center rises as a pure, windowless cube at the World Trade Center site, wrapped entirely in translucent, bookmatched Portuguese marble. By day it reads as a solemn, monolithic stone edifice — quiet and respectful of its charged surroundings — but at night the building transforms, its marble skin glowing from within as the light of performances and rehearsals bleeds through the stone. Designed by Joshua Ramus of REX and opened in 2023, it was the final piece of the original World Trade Center master plan to be built, more than two decades after 9/11.

Inside, the cube's austere exterior gives way to a highly engineered interior: three flexible theaters, developed with consultant Charcoalblue, use movable walls and scene docks to reconfigure into more than five dozen different layouts — turning what looks like a single fixed form outside into an almost infinitely adaptable machine for performance inside. That contrast, a still, marble monolith concealing constant transformation, is the building's central idea.
